Are You a Native American?

sitting_bullWhat country were you born in?  Australia?  Canada?  Mexico perhaps?  Well, if you weren’t born in a foreign country, then by default you are a Native American.

Several days ago I got to talking with a friend about the different terms that people and/or races use to describe themselves.  We quickly got into the absurdity of what some folks do.

And in the name of “political correctness”, the absurdity of what others do.

Take the term “Native American” for instance.  Did you know that 78% of American Indians either prefer to be called either American Indian or just plain Indian?  So where did the term “Native American” come from?

According to Mr. Wikipedia it started being used in the 60s and 70s (1960s and 70s by the way; NOT the 1860s or 1870s).  It was started by a group of NON-Indian folks who were trying to come up with a different term that wouldn’t be as offensive to Indians as “redskins”.  I guess they couldn’t use the term “reds” as that might get confused with Commies.

So what’s the point of this blog?  Just to say that I’ve about had my belly full of political correctness and all the lunacy that can follow it.  The non-Indian diversity dictators that choose to force the term Native American on me are appreciated but badly mis-guided in their efforts.

I’m part American Indian.  Not at all Native American.  And my other part?  Well, I’m NOT European-American.  I’m Scotch Irish.

So if you want to be accurate (though NOT politically correct), then call me MUTT.  I’m 50% Scotch Irish, 25% Cherokee and 25% Oglala Sioux.

And I’m OK with that.  Some of the best four-legged friends I had growing up were mutts.
