Went strolling the other day with JB. We grabbed a cup of coffee at my favorite hangout, Firestorm and then headed on out to the Mountain to Sea Trail (MST). The MST runs from western North Carolina on to the coast — she and I have promised each other that one day we’re gonna hike the whole length of it. But for now we just covered a portion of the trail.
Nothing like strolling through the woods with a pretty lady to make your day. We hiked in about 3 or 4 miles and then sat and talked a spell. Not about much — and yet about everything. Seems like whenever JB and I get together we do alot of talking and walking.
Anyways, there was alot of storm damage that was still being cleaned up. The winter here was the hardest one in quite a few years, so there were alot of trees down and some of them had been cut up — but not all.
We got back to the car and headed out to Oteen to visit some friends that I had introduced her to before and then time to come on back to town to find something to kill and skin for dinner. We scored on a couple of free bag lunches that included chips, PB&J and a softdrink. With it starting to rain, we went looking for shelter and I remember the Montford Park.
We got there just as the drizzle started coming down seriously and sat under the concession stand and chatted — some more — and enjoyed the free meal. We were just trying to figure out what to do next, when stagehands started coming out from the back of the stage and began setting up for the night’s play.
We had stumbled across Shakespeare in the Park.
I’m gonna be doing an article on them later in the week for Earthwalkers, so keep an eye out in this space for it. But in the meantime, let me reflect.
A walk in the woods with a pretty lady. PB&J at no cost. And an evening watching the Montford Park Players performing Shakespeare’s greatest hits. My ol’ man was right.
The best things in life are free.
