Someone emailed me the other day and asked me how they can live a life of travel and adventure. Seems like they were tired of their routine-boring-9-to-5-stuck-in-the-box life and were anxious to break open the seams and start living.
It’s a legitimate question. It’s one that I asked asked with some regularity. I’ve never had what I feel is a satisfactory answer — until now. The answer is so simple you might be tempted to completely disregard it. Most people think that guidance is only good if it’s complicated and difficult to follow.
This advice is simple. Probably the simplest advice you’ve ever received. Ready? Have a pen and paper handy to write it down? The advice is:
Never say no.
See, I told you it was simple.
I’m sure that numerous scientific studies and a lot of tax dollars have been spent to find out what the average ten-year old already knows; the first word most people learn as toddlers. “No”.
We want to touch things, we’re told “no”. We want to experience new tastes, we’re told “no”. We want to explore our world, we’re told “no”.
We learn to say no before we ever learn to say yes. It’s this propensity to say “no” to anything that life presents us with that keeps us in our little “routine-boring-9-to-5-stuck-in-the-box”.
Have a story tip or idea? I’m always on the lookout for unique people, places and things. Everyone has a story to tell. Not everyone can tell their story.
